Preventive Care
Regular care can keep your dental problems small, maybe even
non-existent. Basic care includes consistent check-ups and professional
cleanings, combined with daily care you provide from the programs we
design specifically for your needs. Following basic routine dental care, you will keep
your teeth as healthy as possible for the near future, and save you
time, discomfort, and money. It is a wise and sound investment.
Cleanings & Examinations
We offer routine dental examinations and teeth cleaning, which include comprehensive examinations, cancer screenings, cosmetic screenings, and
examinations of jaw joints. Our X-rays utilize digital technology in place of the traditional film
captures. Computed dental radiography, or CDR, which uses a plastic mouthpiece to send
instant X-ray images to a computer monitor, cuts the amount of
patients' radiation exposure and time in the office.
Because it eliminates the use of developing chemicals, CDR is less harmful to the
environment and uses 90% less radiation than traditional X-ray films.
Additionally, patients will notice that all the doctors use magnifying
surgical loupes (glasses) to enhance their vision. This allows them to
see decay often missed by the unaided eye. It's been
shown that using magnifiying glasses allows us to perform at a higher
level.

Sealants
One of the most common places that tooth decay develops is on the chewing surfaces
of the back teeth, called premolars and molars. When you run your
tongue along the chewing surfaces of the back teeth, you can feel the depressions and grooves. These indentations,
called pits and fissures are there to help grind food and are difficult to keep clean, because
toothbrush bristles cannot reach the microscopic grooves to remove the plaque and bacteria.
Because pits and fissures are difficult to keep clean, sealants are
recommended especially in children. A dental sealant is a plastic
material that is applied to the chewing surface of a back tooth. The
sealants act as a barrier, protecting the enamel and preventing tooth
decay.
Non-surgical Gum Therapy
Sometimes patients come to our practice after years without having
their teeth professionally cleaned and monitored. Often, we find their
gums infected with large amounts of bacterial build-up on the surfaces
of the teeth. The first non-surgical step usually involves a special
cleaning, called ''scaling and root planing' to remove plaque and tartar
deposits on the tooth and root surfaces. This procedure helps gum
tissue to heal and periodontal pockets to shrink. This is sometimes
referred to as 'periodontal deep cleaning' and may require multiple
visits.
At subsequent visits, our dentists will check the pocket depths to
determine the effect of the scaling and root planning. At this point,
many patients do not require any further active treatment, only
preventive care. If the periodontal pockets are still deep and the
supporting bone is lost, you may require special medication or you
might be referred to a periodontist, a dentist who specializes in the
treatment of gums and bone that support the teeth.
