Most patients are comfortable and confident in the dental office.
Sometimes, however, a patient feels anxious during treatment. The
patient may need more support than a gentle, caring manner to feel
comfortable. Nitrous oxide or laughing gas, is a safe, effective
technique to alleviate the anxieties that occur in the dental office.
Nitrous oxide is a blend of two gases, oxygen and nitrous oxide. When
inhaled, it is absorbed by the body and has a calming effect. Normal
breathing eliminates the nitrous oxide from our body. Nitrous oxide
has a sweet smell and the patient will experience a sense of well being
and relaxation.
Nitrous oxide is perhaps the safest sedative in dentistry. The
gas is non-addictive and is quickly eliminated by the body. Patients
remain fully conscious and have control of all natural reflexes.
Nitrous oxide is especially useful in children and is available to our child patients.
