At Shoreham Family Dental we offer either silver or porcelain/white fillings. Traditionally, fillings
were placed using Silver Amalgam, but your choices are Gold, Porcelain, Silver Amalgam and an
abundance of composite materials (generically known as white fillings) that come in
many formulas. There are several kinds of white fillings and when and how they are used is very important. We will help you decide which filling is best for you.
Silver Amalgam
Silver is strong and works well in the back of the mouth where heavy
chewing takes place. It has been used for over 200 years and has stood
the test of time. It is the most cost effective material but of course
it's drawback is esthetics. Most patients today want tooth-colored
materials.
White Fillings (Composites)
A well-placed composite can last as long as a silver filling. However,
in some areas of the mouth it will wear 3 to 10 times faster. There are
also many blends of composites that fit specific situations. Composites
are technique sensitive materials and require special training to place
them correctly. At Shoreham Family Dental we are specially trained at
placing these composite fillings. This training is usually obtained in
special 'hands-on' clinical courses.
